Blair urges Miliband to scrap 2030 clean power goal
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair called on Energy Secretary Ed Miliband to abandon the 2030 clean power deadline and reduce environmental charges after research showed climate policies increase expenses for residents and companies. His institute published findings that electricity grid decarbonization targets harm manufacturers and strain household budgets. The report warned that expensive energy programs could push voters toward opposition parties before regional elections next year. The authors said officials must prioritize affordable rates alongside environmental goals.
Green levies account for 20 percent of average power bills compared with 8.5 percent in 2015 as policy expenses surpass actual electricity costs at 334 pounds versus 324 pounds. Infrastructure connecting offshore wind installations to national grids will require 112 billion pounds for transmission equipment. Blair argued that Britain became a low-carbon but high-expense economy through current regulations. Miliband rejected the conclusions and defended government plans to lower costs through reduced fossil fuel dependence and nuclear energy expansion.
