ChatGPT Ctrl+Enter Sender
The ChatGPT Ctrl+Enter Sender is a browser extension for the Google Chrome web browser. It changes how you send messages on some websites that have chatbots powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These websites include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Mistral AI, Claude, and Bing Chat.
Normally on these websites, you press the Enter key on your keyboard to send a message to the AI chatbot. But if you press Enter by mistake, the message gets sent before you are ready. The ChatGPT Ctrl+Enter Sender extension fixes this problem.
How it works
When you install the ChatGPT Ctrl+Enter Sender extension in Chrome, it changes what the Enter key does on supported websites. Now when you press Enter, instead of sending the message right away, it makes a new line so you can keep typing.
If you do want to send your message, you hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard and press Enter. “Ctrl+Enter” is a keyboard shortcut that means “hold Ctrl and press Enter.” On Mac computers, you use Command instead of Ctrl.
So with this extension, Enter alone makes new lines and Ctrl+Enter actually sends the message. This is the opposite of how it normally works on these AI chat websites.
Turning it on and off
The ChatGPT Ctrl+Enter Sender extension adds a little icon to the Chrome browser. You can see the icon in the top right corner of the browser window. If you click this icon, a small popup appears with a switch.
When the switch is blue and pointing to the right, that means the extension is turned on. Websites like ChatGPT will use the new Ctrl+Enter sending behavior. When the switch is gray and pointing to the left, the extension is turned off. The AI chat websites go back to working like normal, where Enter sends the message.
Supported websites
As of version 1.4.0, the extension works on these websites:
- ChatGPT
- Perplexity
- Mistral AI (supported starting in version 1.3.0)
- Claude (supported starting in version 1.4.0)
- Bing Chat (supported starting in version 1.4.0)
The extension automatically detects when you are on one of these supported sites and makes the change to use Ctrl+Enter for sending. On other websites, it won’t do anything. So you can leave the extension turned on all the time without it affecting non-AI chat sites.
Why it’s helpful
Many people type fast and press the Enter key by habit to make new paragraphs. On AI chat websites, this can cause problems because Enter sends the message. People often end up sending messages too early by mistake. The assistants get confused and give strange replies.
The ChatGPT Ctrl+Enter Sender extension helps with this issue. It lets you type naturally, pressing Enter whenever you want to start a new line. You only have to think about sending the message when you are really done typing. Using Ctrl+Enter to send feels different from just Enter, so it’s harder to do by accident.
Another benefit is you can put line breaks in your messages to the AI. If you want to send a poem or some code with multiple lines, you can do that now without sending each line as a separate message. This makes it easier to format messages the way you want.
Other ways to send carefully
The Ctrl+Enter extension helps prevent accidental message sending. But it’s still a good idea to read over your message before you send it, even when using Ctrl+Enter. You might spot a mistake or think of something else to say.
Another tip is to get in the habit of pausing after you finish typing a message, before reaching for the Send button or keyboard shortcut. Take a deep breath and look away from the screen for a moment. Then look back at your message with fresh eyes to check it one more time.
You can also copy your message text before attempting to send, in case something goes wrong. That way you have a backup and can easily retry sending without retyping the whole thing.
