China Mobile lights up 2Africa cable to boost Africa’s internet
China Mobile completed activation of the East segment of the 2Africa submarine cable at a Nairobi ceremony, a move officials said will strengthen Africa’s digital backbone. The company also rolled out an AI plus cloud network convergence industry solution during the event. The subsea system stretches to 33 nations on three continents and is built to carry up to 180 terabits per second, enhancing cross-border links and boosting Kenya’s presence on global networks.
The project supports Kenya’s Digital Superhighway and Creative Pillar initiatives, which call for a 100,000-kilometer nationwide fiber rollout, 25,000 public Wi-Fi sites, technology centers in every ward and wider access to e-government services. Attendees at the ceremony included William Kabogo, Principal Secretary for ICT and the Digital Economy, John Tanui, the Chinese ambassador to Kenya, China Mobile executives and other industry figures, reflecting close bilateral cooperation on digital expansion.
