Dan Houser’s new studio developing AI-driven dystopia game
Dan Houser, who co-founded Rockstar Games and penned stories for titles ranging from GTA London: 1969 through Red Dead Redemption 2, shared his thoughts during a recent three-hour appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast. The writer departed from Rockstar in early 2020 after 22 years and later established Absurd Ventures, which has produced podcasts, graphic novels, and written works while developing video games.
When asked about his preferred character from the Grand Theft Auto series, Houser selected Niko Bellic from GTA IV. He praised the Serbian immigrant protagonist as the most groundbreaking character and noted his moral complexity compared to other leads. Houser also highlighted strong performances from other actors, particularly Ned Luke’s portrayal of Michael in GTA V, which he felt anchored that installment despite receiving less recognition than other cast members.
Regarding artificial intelligence in game development, Houser expressed measured optimism about his industry’s future. He suggested that while AI systems can handle basic tasks effectively, they cannot generate truly original concepts. The technology may eliminate opportunities for less skilled workers, but should not threaten talented creators, he said. Absurd Ventures currently has two games in development, with one based on the near-future setting A Better Paradise at its Santa Monica location.
