GST collections jump 7.8 percent, festive demand lifts India
India collected 1.95 trillion rupees in goods and services tax during October, representing a 4.6 percent gain from 1.87 trillion rupees during the same month one year earlier. Government figures released on Monday showed the increase reflects consumer spending strength during religious festivals and policy adjustments that took effect in late September. Annual GST receipts climbed 7.8 percent from 9.65 trillion rupees between October 2024 and October 2025 to reach 10.4 trillion rupees.
Trade-related tax receipts expanded 12.9 percent annually while refunds surged 39.6 percent. Domestic refund payments increased 26.5 percent and import-related reimbursements jumped 55.3 percent. Net collections after refunds totaled 1.69 trillion rupees, marking a 7.1 percent yearly increase from 1.68 trillion rupees.
Five states accounted for more than 40 percent of total revenue. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Haryana led collections due to their positions as centers for manufacturing and commerce. Officials said the figures demonstrate economic stability and expanding tax compliance heading into the second half of fiscal 2025-26.
