Horror films that blend beauty with fear
Horror cinema has produced visually striking imagery that transcends the genre’s typical association with darkness and violence. Cinematographers have employed techniques ranging from German Expressionism to saturated color palettes to create memorable scenes that blend beauty with terror.
Notable examples include the shadow sequence from Nosferatu, where cinematographer Fritz Arno Wagner used high-contrast lighting to suggest menace without showing the vampire directly. Owen Roizman earned an Academy Award nomination for The Exorcist, particularly for the fog-shrouded scene of a priest arriving at a possessed girl’s home. Dario Argento directed cinematographer Luciano Tovoli to use discontinued Kodak film stock for Suspiria’s intensely saturated primary colors.
Midsommar diverged from horror conventions by setting its unsettling narrative in constant daylight with pastel tones inspired by classic Technicolor films. The Night of the Hunter featured an underwater scene with elaborate lighting that required eight powerful arc lamps suspended above a water tank to achieve its haunting effect.
