Kendrick Lamar – peekaboo

The entire hip-hop world was surprised when Kendrick Lamar released GNX on Friday. Although it’s only been out for a few days, this has already been hailed as the year’s best hip-hop album. Kendrick has united the West Coast with this album, with numerous smaller West Coast artists on the project. He’s put together one of his most unique albums yet.

His albums have always been based on concepts. In GKMC, Kendrick describes his time in Compton. In TPAB, he talks about the racism that America was built on. Mr. Morale was a therapy session all in one. GNX, however, doesn’t burden Kendrick with a superb concept. Instead, he’s just having fun. GNX’s song “Peekaboo” with AzChike is a great example. It’s got skeletal yet bounced production that Kendrick sounds just as menacing as ever. It’s amazing how he and AzChike balance each other on several occasions.

“Peekaboo” is an excellent example of Kendrick’s creative space. He wants to enjoy himself but also embraces the nickname “boogeyman.” In GNX, it’s a victory lap, and we don’t think it’ll end anytime soon.
