NERC reports 60% of generation plants unavailable in October 2025
Nigeria’s electricity sector operated at significantly reduced capacity during a recent assessment period, with most generation facilities unable to supply power to the grid. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission reported that only 5,506 megawatts from an installed base of 13,625 megawatts were ready for distribution, leaving approximately 60 percent of generation plants unavailable.
The commission’s performance report showed a 78 percent average load factor, meaning 4,290 megawatt-hours per hour of accessible generation were utilized. Among the nation’s largest electricity producers, Egbin, Delta, Kainji, and Zungeru facilities led output contributions during the review period.
Among the ten highest-performing plants accounting for 80 percent of total generation, Zungeru operated at maximum output while others ran below full capacity. Egbin delivered 656 megawatts from its 1,320-megawatt capability, Kainji hydro plant generated 572 megawatts from 760 megawatts available, and Delta 1 produced 760 megawatts from a 900-megawatt installation.
