Rotary, NMS draw fire over free clinic push
Multiple Rotary and Rotaract organizations joined forces with National Medical Stores to provide no-cost health care to 2,100 people at a community event held at NMS Grounds in Kajjansi, central Uganda. The Rotary Club of Medical Stars led the effort alongside more than 15 other clubs from areas such as Kigo Seven Lakes Golf, Entebbe Base and Muyenga Tankhill. Attendees received eye examinations and glasses, general consultations, dental work, lab work and cancer detection services.
Moses Kamabare, who heads National Medical Stores, said the collaboration aimed to deliver treatment to populations who struggle to obtain specialized medical attention. Sarah Namaganda, a 68-year-old resident from Masaka, described receiving a diagnosis, medications and eyeglasses despite having no funds for hospital visits. Rotary volunteers worked with physicians, pharmacists and logistics personnel throughout the day while also providing education about managing long-term conditions and recognizing cancer warning signs.
Charter President Sheilla Nduhukire of the Rotary Club of Medical Stars said the effort demonstrated the organization’s dedication to humanitarian work. Organizers plan to repeat the camp twice annually. Services provided during the event numbered 900 pharmacy visits, 425 eye screenings, 274 dental procedures, 270 reproductive health consultations and 259 laboratory tests among other categories.
