Strava updates API terms: apps can show less data and not train AI
Fitness app Strava has updated its API terms, restricting third-party apps from showing data and from using data to train AI models. The policy goes into effect on November 11, though Strava didn’t share the new terms until November 15.
Strava announced that data about a user’s activity will now only be shown to that specific user. The company later updated that this has to do with privacy. “Specifically, we want to address situations where users connect to a third-party app and are unaware that their data is being shared not only for their own use and visibility but also with other users,” Strava said.
The terms also explicitly prohibit using Strava data for training AI models “or similar uses.” The company says it doesn’t expect the new terms to impact significantly. “We expect these changes to affect only a small portion (less than 0.1 percent) of uses on the Strava platform; the vast majority of existing uses will still be permitted.”
