Trump signs major trade deals in Asia tour
President Donald Trump described his first Asian tour as yielding potentially profitable trade agreements after signing deals with Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. The American leader attended the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur and plans similar pacts in Japan and South Korea.
Trump and Malaysian officials signed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and Agreement on Reciprocal Trade upon his arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Saturday. The arrangements promote cooperation in trade, investment, technology and energy while diversifying critical mineral supply chains away from Chinese dominance.
Trump met Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and suggested both nations could finalize favorable agreements. American and Chinese trade officials held preliminary negotiations in Kuala Lumpur ahead of a possible meeting between Trump and President Xi Jinping at the APEC Economic Leaders Week in Gyeongju, South Korea.
