Airtel Malawi rolls out VoLTE and 5G
Airtel Malawi has activated Voice over Long Term Evolution technology countrywide and added 57 fifth-generation wireless sites spanning 10 districts, marking a connectivity upgrade for the southern African nation. Managing Director Aashish Dutt said the VoLTE deployment will improve call clarity and connection speeds while allowing simultaneous voice and data usage, representing a technical advance over previous cellular voice systems.
The telecommunications operator described its 5G expansion as supporting applications in commerce, healthcare, education, farming, and connected home technologies through reduced latency and increased network capacity. Airtel credited collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority for enabling infrastructure development aligned with the Malawi 2063 development framework.
Additional 5G installations are planned for the coming months, with customers encouraged to enable compatible features on supported handsets.
