Ghana approves Dig Once road fibre plan
Ghana’s cabinet has authorized a proposal from the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications requiring fiber-optic conduits to be installed during all new road construction projects, a measure announced at the Africa Tech Festival in Cape Town. The measure seeks to lower broadband infrastructure expenses by as much as 90 percent while addressing damage from roadworks that have generated repair bills approaching $70 million since 2021, with approximately 60 percent of network disruptions attributed to excavation activities.
The chamber praised the government’s strategic direction and pledged cooperation on implementation. Officials anticipate the framework will advance 5G deployment, protect transportation infrastructure from repeated digging, and expand affordable connectivity across commercial, educational, and healthcare applications while establishing a continental benchmark for integrated infrastructure development.
