EU deepens cultural ties with Africa through art
The European Union plans to expand cultural partnerships with African nations through creative programs and artistic exchanges. EU Ambassador to Nigeria Gautier Mignot announced the commitment on Tuesday at an Afrobeat Rebellion Exhibition in Lagos that honored musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Diplomats from Poland, Finland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Portugal attended the event at Ecobank Pan African Center. The French Embassy supported the exhibition, which moved from Paris to showcase photography and multimedia displays on Afrobeat’s influence on global music.
Mignot said art connects people across borders and promotes shared understanding between continents. The exhibition traces how Fela’s political music became a symbol of resistance and cultural identity that continues to inspire musicians worldwide.
Visitors explored installations and historical photographs that document the evolution of the Afrobeat movement. The ambassador described the Lagos showing as a homecoming for the music style that originated in the Nigerian city.
