FAO hails Oyetola’s push for fish production in Nigeria
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has commended Nigeria’s Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola for advancing initiatives to expand domestic fish output and promote sustainable practices in aquatic resource management. FAO Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS Hussein Gadain delivered the recognition during a meeting in Abuja, highlighting the ministry’s National Policy on Marine and Blue Economy as an effective framework for utilizing maritime assets while positioning the country as a continental leader in the sector.
Oyetola acknowledged the partnership and stressed his department’s determination to eliminate production shortfalls that have necessitated decades of fish imports, stating the nation possesses sufficient capacity to satisfy internal consumption needs. The minister identified fisheries and aquaculture as central components of economic strategy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting their potential to preserve foreign currency reserves, generate employment opportunities, and support nutritional objectives through enhanced local production systems.
