FCCPC stresses food safety as public health priority
Nigeria’s consumer protection agency warned food producers that profit cannot override public safety at a Thursday campaign in Jos. Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission Executive Vice Chairman Olatunji Bello said dangerous practices threaten millions of people who consume chemically ripened fruits and adulterated products.
The commission documented widespread use of calcium carbide for artificial fruit ripening and bromate additives in processed foods. Nkechi Mba represented Bello at the Novel Suite Rayfield event focused on quality standards and business practices across the agricultural sector.
Officials told industry representatives that regulatory violations would bring legal consequences. The agency emphasized that food handlers bear responsibility for community health because contaminated products harm families who purchase them from retail outlets.
Bello urged consumers to stay informed about safety regulations and support businesses that maintain proper standards. The commission described safe food access as a fundamental right rather than a market commodity subject only to commercial interests.
