Lagos starts compensating Oworonshoki residents
Lagos State began distributing compensation payments to residents of Oworonshoki displaced by urban renewal efforts on Thursday, October 23. The government verified the compensation claims of 79 people after removing illegal structures built on drainage channels and waterways in the Kosofe Local Government Area.
Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency General Manager Olajide Animashaun said the agency demolished unsafe buildings that created environmental hazards. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu authorized the payments to fulfill promises made to affected families and business owners when clearance work started months earlier.
Recipients collected checks at the traditional ruler’s palace over two days. Ajimoh Oyenuga and Olaide Fatima thanked officials for keeping their commitment after losing homes near the water. Community leaders, development associations, and security personnel attended the distribution ceremony.
The renewal program aims to restore drainage systems and improve safety across the neighborhood. Agency officials pledged to implement future development projects transparently, affecting residents.
