Govt vows stronger consumer protections and rules
India will tighten rules against unfair business practices while making compliance easier for companies, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Saturday. The government aims to create a marketplace that protects buyers through stronger enforcement and simpler regulations.
Joshi spoke at a legal metrology conference in Goa alongside Chief Minister Pramod Sawant about business regulations and digital tools. The minister said the administration wants to balance economic growth with consumer protection as India works toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2047.
Officials recently changed packaging rules to reduce paperwork for businesses. Companies must send price updates to sellers and state regulators, but no longer need to publish notices in two newspapers. The shift reflects efforts to cut red tape while maintaining oversight of commercial activities.
