Govt urges fisheries sector to register for benefits
India’s fisheries stakeholders must register with the National Fisheries Development Programme to access insurance and welfare assistance, Minister George Kurian said on Saturday. The federal official urged participants at an outreach event in Thrissur to enroll in the initiative aimed at supporting fishing communities.
Nine coastal villages in Kerala will receive climate-resistant infrastructure worth 2 crore rupees each from the central government. Processing facilities and community buildings will be established as officials work to boost production in the world’s second-largest fish processing nation.
The minister distributed credit cards and tracking devices to fishers while praising Kerala’s cooperation in implementing national policies. Multiple harbors have been upgraded through joint funding from both governments, with low-interest financing available for additional improvements.
Federal authorities will finance technology upgrades while state officials select beneficiaries for development programs. Cooperative societies of fish farmers will receive priority support under the expanded welfare system.
