ICC judge warns of grave challenge to court’s independence
An International Criminal Court judge warned that sanctions and arrest warrants against the tribunal threaten judicial independence worldwide. Judge Beti Hohler addressed attendees at an Irish Rule of Law International event in Belfast, describing attacks on the court as severe and unprecedented. Both the United States and Russia have targeted ICC officials through economic penalties and criminal charges after investigations into American conduct in Afghanistan, Israeli leadership and Russian authorities.
Hohler faces American sanctions and Russian arrest warrants alongside fellow judges. She said these actions carry serious consequences for court personnel and their relatives beyond symbolic gestures. The judge cautioned that undermining international tribunals will damage national legal systems and erode protections for everyone.
She urged lawyers and judges across borders to unite in defense of legal principles. Irish Rule of Law International began operations in 2007 through a partnership between legal organizations from the Republic of Ireland, with Northern Ireland groups joining in 2015.
