Lizzo sued over copyright infringement for song snippet
A Georgia trust filed suit against Lizzo in California federal court on Tuesday over alleged unauthorized use of a 1970 soul composition. The GRC Trust claims the singer sampled Sam Dees’ Win Or Lose without permission in a social media track that referenced Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle campaign. Settlement talks broke down before the legal action.
Representatives for Lizzo said they were caught off guard by the complaint because the song never earned money or appeared commercially. The snippet circulated on TikTok and Instagram over the summer before vanishing from her accounts. The trust wants profits returned and an order blocking further distribution of the material.
This marks the second recent copyright case for GRC Trust after suing Kanye West in September over different Dee’s material. Lizzo faced similar allegations in 2019 when songwriters claimed their work appeared in Truth Hurts without credit. Jimmy Ginn, of the Atlanta-based catalog firm Ginn Music Group, represents the trust.
