U2 claims Woody Guthrie Prize at Tulsa’s Cain’s Ballroom
U2 received the Woody Guthrie Prize on Tuesday at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa. Bono and the Edge accepted the award on behalf of the Irish rock band. The honor recognizes musicians who use their platform for social activism.
The duo performed eight songs for attendees at the Oklahoma venue. They played U2 standards such as Sunday Bloody Sunday and One alongside traditional folk songs. Bono noted the pair had not visited the ballroom since 1981, when the group performed their first Oklahoma concert.
The Woody Guthrie Center presents the annual prize to artists committed to justice through music. Past recipients include Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, and Tom Morello. Bono and the Edge also participated in an onstage discussion with producer T Bone Burnett at the ceremony.
