MAN Governing Council warns against converting academy into university
Leadership at the Maritime Academy of Nigeria has warned that efforts to transform the specialized training facility into a conventional university could undermine its international recognition and eliminate statutory funding from the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency. Governing Council Chairman Kehinde Akinola stated the institution already possesses the authority to award advanced credentials under existing legislation while maintaining alignment with global maritime education standards established through International Maritime Organization partnerships since its founding.
The Alumni Association previously cautioned that transferring oversight to educational authorities would violate international training conventions and jeopardize certification standards required for seafarer competency. Akinola noted the academy recently completed its inaugural conditions of service documentation and developed strategic planning synchronized with national blue economy objectives while supporting nearby communities through infrastructure projects.
