Namibia’s air quality safe despite offshore oil production risks
An environmental and social impact assessment on the Venus Offshore PEL0056/Block 2913B for TotalEnergies indicates that oil production off Namibia’s Lüderitz coastline will not significantly harm air quality. The assessment, conducted by independent consultants, notes that while ship emissions and occasional flaring could release pollutants, the prevailing winds will carry these emissions out to sea, keeping air quality safe for nearby communities. The project is expected to contribute only 0.05% of global carbon emissions and reduce Namibia’s carbon absorption capacity by up to 1.21%.
