Nigeria launches upgraded NgREN to power digital education
Nigeria’s education ministry introduced an enhanced national academic network merged with a digital services platform during a ceremony held in Abuja, advancing the country’s technology goals for higher learning institutions. Education Minister Chief Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa called the development a landmark achievement in using technology and collaborative data systems to improve instruction and scholarly work. The combined system provides universities, polytechnics and education colleges with improved digital links, innovation support and stronger research cooperation.
The merged Nigerian Research and Education Network and Tertiary Education, Research, Applications, and Services platform creates a single digital framework offering rapid internet connections, cloud resources and sophisticated research instruments. Institutions gain entry to academic databases, plagiarism checkers, powerful computing systems and analytical tools for campus operations. World Bank funding through SPESSE and ACE Impact projects supports cloud data facilities, electronic libraries and wireless campus coverage to expand equal access to educational materials. Alausa praised the National Universities Commission and Tertiary Education Trust Fund for championing digital access in education. Officials stated the infrastructure supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes building an innovation-based economy through technology and broad educational opportunities.
