Customs intercepts N29.4B cocaine shipment in Lagos
Nigerian authorities recovered one metric ton of cocaine from an empty shipping container at Port and Terminal Multiservices Limited in Lagos, with the narcotics valued at approximately 29.4 billion naira. Customs Area Controller Joe Anani told reporters that terminal operators discovered 1,000 parcels during a disinfection inspection of the 20-foot container, which arrived from Freetown, Sierra Leone, designated for export loading rather than import processing.
Security personnel from multiple agencies, including the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, State Security Services, and police bomb units, participated in examining the vessel bearing serial number GCNU1332851. No suspects have been detained because investigators found no consignee information linked to the shipment.
Anani praised the terminal operator for reporting the discovery and confirmed the seized contraband would be transferred to drug enforcement officials for additional investigation. The controller characterized the incident as among the most unusual narcotic interdictions in the service’s operational history.
