Nigeria targets $94b from livestock by 2030
Nigeria aims to expand livestock sector contributions from the current $32 billion to between $74 billion and $94 billion within a decade through strategic development initiatives targeting food security and rural employment. Peter Alike, director in the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development technical office, disclosed the targets during a regional policy workshop in Abuja, addressing agricultural priorities across West Africa and the Sahel.
The ministry emphasized collaboration among Nigeria, ECOWAS and regional partners to achieve shared agricultural objectives. Fernando Escribano, an agricultural engineer working with the PRISMA research initiative, highlighted efforts to combat aflatoxin contamination in animal feed through harmonized testing standards across borders. ECOWAS Acting Executive Director Konlani Kanfitin confirmed the organization’s commitment to advancing research cooperation throughout the region.
The European Union and Spanish cooperation agencies are co-financing the PRISMA project, which promotes climate-adapted innovations for productive agro-pastoral systems.
