Okra Solar launches Mesh-grid Beyond to power Nigeria’s off-grid areas
Okra Solar has introduced hardware designed to extend electricity access across Nigeria’s remote areas, where more than 90 million people lack power connections. Chief Executive Afnan Hannan said the Mesh-grid Beyond system enables energy providers to reach isolated settlements while maintaining commercial viability through integrated components that reduce installation costs and deployment periods.
The technology suite includes Sprout units delivering up to 2.4 kilowatts for commercial users, Leaf connections priced below $100 per household, and OkraNet communication infrastructure that functions without cellular coverage. First Electric CEO Daniel Komolafe said the equipment allows faster rollout to communities previously considered unprofitable.
The hardware addresses challenges facing the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up initiative by cutting funding requirements compared with traditional mini-grid systems while connecting low-consumption households at sustainable rates. Distribution companies can begin immediate implementation with manufacturer support for large-scale installations.
