Over 1 lakh tech jobs slashed in 2025 as AI reshapes industry
Technology sector job cuts have reached more than 100,000 positions across 218 firms worldwide during the opening months of this year as companies shift resources toward artificial intelligence and automation. Intel eliminated the largest number at 24,000 workers, representing approximately 22 percent of its total staff at locations spanning the United States, Germany, Costa Rica and Poland. Amazon dropped roughly 14,000 corporate positions while Microsoft reduced its workforce by about 9,000 employees in multiple rounds, affecting product development and software teams.
The downsizing wave has touched India as well. Tata Consultancy Services recorded its sharpest quarterly decline ever by cutting around 20,000 jobs between July and September, citing automation demands and skills gaps. Chief executive Andy Jassy at Amazon characterized his approach as operating the retail giant like a startup focused on efficiency. Other major players like Google, Meta, and Oracle have trimmed headcount in hardware, Android and artificial intelligence divisions to eliminate redundancies and lower expenses. Analysts note businesses are prioritizing worker retraining for emerging analytics roles rather than maintaining traditional positions.
