Salam Telecom and AFR-IX advance Medusa cable project in Saudi Arabia
Etihad Salam Telecom and AFR-IX Telecom have confirmed continued progress on their collaboration supporting the Medusa Submarine Cable System during discussions at Connected World 2025 in Riyadh. Salam operates as the international gateway partner for the cable landing in Saudi Arabia, delivering terrestrial backhaul services and interconnection access to hyperscalers, cloud providers and regional carriers as part of Vision 2030 objectives to establish the kingdom as a digital hub connecting Europe, Africa and Asia.
The Mediterranean subsea infrastructure extends approximately 8,700 kilometers and represents the longest undersea cable in the region, linking 11 countries including Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan. The system incorporates ROADM and Space Division Multiplexing technologies to support 480 terabits per second of total design capacity, strengthening international bandwidth availability across the basin while integrating Salam terrestrial networks with AFR-IX subsea cable capabilities.
