Fake wine crackdown uncorks Lagos market
Industry leaders in Nigeria’s wine market are escalating a campaign against counterfeit and substandard products, citing public health risks and significant revenue loss. Chinedu Rita Rosa, founder of Vines by Rosa, emphasized that the initiative aims to protect consumers by ensuring access to authentic wines at fair prices. She identified consumer education and supply chain transparency as critical tools for combating fraudulent dealers.
Rosa warned that fake wines pose a direct threat to public health and also deprive the government of substantial tax and customs revenue from legitimate imports. She advised consumers to verify the provenance of their purchases online to ensure authenticity.
Roberto Cardinale, an export manager for Italian wineries, observed that wine appreciation in Nigeria is growing, partly driven by returning citizens with more refined tastes. This heightened demand for quality, stakeholders argue, makes regulatory vigilance and market integrity increasingly important.
