Spotify runs ICE recruitment ads as artists pull music over Helsing ties
Several musicians recently removed their catalogs from Spotify over founder Daniel Ek’s financial ties to artificial intelligence defense contractor Helsing. The streaming platform now displays recruitment advertisements for Immigration and Customs Enforcement on accounts that use the free ad-supported service. A company representative said the promotions comply with platform policies and form part of a broader government campaign across multiple digital channels.
Independent labels Epitaph and ANTI posted statements this week requesting that Spotify eliminate the enforcement agency spots. Users can mark advertisements with approval or disapproval ratings to reduce their frequency. Similar recruitment messages appear on YouTube and other streaming services. The controversy adds another concern for artists, weighing whether to maintain their presence on the platform despite modest royalty payments.
