Taylor Sheridan leaves Paramount for Universal after merger
Taylor Sheridan signed a production agreement with Universal after Paramount declined to renew his contract following the Skydance merger. The creator developed hit series such as Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, and Landman, which attracted millions of viewers to Paramount+. Executives he worked with lost their positions after the merger, prompting his departure.
Paramount plans to acquire the Warner Bros. catalog and feature programs such as The Sopranos and Game of Thrones, rather than funding expensive original productions. Universal seeks to expand the Peacock streaming service by adding content that appeals to a wider audience. The shift reflects consolidation across entertainment companies as they compete for subscribers.
Sheridan’s programs required substantial budgets, placing financial pressure on smaller studios. His move to Universal signals the company’s commitment to streaming growth through proven creators. Paramount signed other producers, such as the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, to multi-year development deals.
