Thyssenkrupp partners with Dangote Fertiliser on urea units
Dangote Fertiliser Limited has secured licensing rights from German technology provider thyssenkrupp Uhde Fertilizer Technology to construct four urea granulation facilities in Lekki using advanced fluid bed processing systems. The installation will increase annual output from approximately 2.65 million metric tons to over 8 million metric tons, with each unit producing 4,235 metric tons daily. The agreement encompasses technology licensing, process design documentation and specialized equipment, including granulators and emission control systems.
The facilities will deploy energy-efficient scrubbing technology and Ammonia Convert Technology to integrate ammonium sulfate byproducts into granules while meeting environmental standards. Aliko Dangote, president of Dangote Group, emphasized that the expansion strengthens Nigeria’s position as a regional fertilizer producer while supporting agricultural self-sufficiency objectives. The new plants will operate adjacent to existing complexes that have utilized thyssenkrupp technology since 2021, with the German firm’s granulation systems currently responsible for producing more than 70 percent of global urea granule supply.
