Trump halts trade talks with Canada over controversial ad
President Donald Trump halted trade discussions with Canada on Thursday after officials in Ontario released advertisements criticizing American tariff policy. The commercials featured audio from former President Ronald Reagan addressing trade restrictions.
Trump claimed the campaign misrepresented Reagan’s position and accused Canadian authorities of attempting to influence a pending Supreme Court decision on tariffs. The Ronald Reagan Foundation stated the provincial government used selective portions of a 1987 radio address.
Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Trump at the White House two weeks earlier, seeking relief from levies that have eliminated jobs across Canadian industries. The existing North American trade agreement keeps roughly 85 percent of bilateral commerce free from duties.
Both leaders plan to attend regional summits in Malaysia and South Korea within days. Canadian inflation rose to 2.4 percent in September as grocery prices climbed amid disrupted supply chains.
