Udeh backs local tech for Nigeria’s progress
Nigeria is prioritizing domestically developed technologies to drive national development and address local challenges through science-based solutions, according to Innovation Minister Kingsley Udeh. The government is advancing initiatives, including enhanced maize varieties that improve pest resistance and crop yields, cassava processing facilities across regional zones to reduce agricultural waste, and biodigesters producing clean energy from biomass materials.
The Energy Commission has manufactured solar generators and locally produced electricity meters while research institutes have created neem-based organic fertilizer, currently used by northern farmers to improve soil conditions and reduce pest damage. Building materials from recycled plastics, bamboo construction solutions for affordable housing, and safety devices, including carbon monoxide sensors, represent additional innovations developed through federal research agencies.
Technology hubs and science laboratories established across six zones provide infrastructure for young researchers to advance the commercialization of discoveries, with traditional leadership engaged to integrate cultural knowledge with scientific development aligned to continental development frameworks.
