Coleman opens Africa’s largest fibre plant
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned Africa’s largest fiber optic cable manufacturing plant and the continent’s first fiber-reinforced plastic production facility in Sagamu, with the capacity to manufacture nine million kilometers of cable annually while processing 13,000 tons of copper and aluminum monthly. Communications Minister Bosun Tijani indicated the government’s 90,000-kilometer national fiber deployment will utilize domestic manufacturers like Coleman Technical Industries Limited, supported by financing partnerships including First City Monument Bank, Bank of Industry and InfraCredit.
Coleman Managing Director George Onafowokan projected the facility will generate over 20,000 direct positions and 200,000 indirect employment opportunities while producing more than one trillion naira in export revenue. Governor Dapo Abiodun characterized the factory as reducing import dependence and bridging digital access gaps across telecommunications, logistics and manufacturing sectors for the company that evolved from a 1975 trading operation into the continent’s premier cable producer.
