URA urges speedy ruling on Shs671b tax cases
The Uganda Revenue Authority asked judges to resolve 58 tax cases worth more than 671 billion shillings that have been stuck in court. Commissioner General John Musinguzi Rujoki told justices at a training session in Entebbe that delays hurt government income collection and business confidence. The country collects tax equal to 13.9 percent of economic output, but needs 20 percent to fund programs without heavy borrowing. Deputy Chief Justice Flavian Zeija said courts face mounting backlogs and need better technology systems.
The five-day program teaches Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court members about oil taxation and dispute settlement methods. Supreme Court Justice Mike Chibita said the training helps judges make better decisions on complex financial matters. Musinguzi said courts play a vital role in creating a fair tax system that encourages people to pay what they owe. The Judicial Training Institute partnered with the revenue agency to organize the workshop.
