World Bank clears $280m Kerala health plan
The World Bank approved $280 million on Friday to expand health services for 11 million elderly and vulnerable residents in Kerala. The Kerala Health System Improvement Programme will strengthen digital health platforms and establish home care for bedridden seniors while tracking hypertension and diabetes patients electronically. Paul Procee of the World Bank stated that robust health systems enable economic growth and better pandemic responses.
The program targets a 40 percent rise in controlled hypertension cases and increased cancer screenings for women despite Kerala’s progress in reducing infant and maternal mortality rates. Non-communicable diseases and an aging population strain existing medical infrastructure, as over 4,000 annual traffic deaths reveal emergency care deficiencies. Five districts will implement climate solutions at primary health centers to address heat and flooding, while the loan carries a 25-year repayment term with a five-year grace period from the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development.
