Xbox to discontinue Avatars, except 360 Avatars
Microsoft will discontinue the Avatars introduced since the Xbox One in January 2025. Users will no longer see their avatars, and consumers who recently purchased something for their avatars will get their money back.
The avatars were created using the Avatars Editor, Xbox reports. These avatars were released in late 2018 and were more customizable than the Xbox 360 avatars, now called Xbox Original Avatars.
Users can create or customize avatars using the Avatars Editor app, but starting January 9, this will no longer be possible. From then on, the Xbox and Windows apps will no longer work. The avatars will also no longer be visible. Microsoft says that the avatar app was underused and speaks of a “shift in focus.” Users who purchased something for their avatar between November 1, 2023, and January 9, 2025, will get their money back.
The Original Avatars will continue to exist. Users can create or customize an Original Avatar after January 9th, and those avatars will continue to be available in games they use. These Original Avatars were introduced in 2008 for the Xbox 360.
