ActionAid trains migrants to boost Nigeria skills base
ActionAid Nigeria has equipped 450 returning migrants with vocational competencies across Edo, Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory through its Reconnect Project, implemented alongside GIZ. Country Director Andrew Mamedu confirmed participants received instruction in fashion design, catering, hairdressing and related trades before graduating with starter equipment including industrial sewing machines, gas cookers and salon tools.
Project Coordinator Abraham Aba stated the initiative targets the reintegration of trafficking survivors by providing market-ready abilities for self-employment. Assistant Comptroller General Echefulam Anugwa from the Nigeria Immigration Service highlighted agency collaboration with humanitarian organizations to assist stranded travelers abroad lacking proper documentation, with officers serving as primary receivers at airports before transferring arrivals to relevant authorities.
Beneficiaries will join existing cooperatives to facilitate collaboration and mentorship while building sustainable enterprises within their localities.
