Transport Minister Creecy reveals results of rail RFI process
South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy will announce the findings of a government inquiry into private investment in rail and port operations. The ministry received 162 formal submissions from companies interested in freight corridor partnerships across three major routes connecting the Northern Cape to Saldanha, Limpopo to Richards Bay, and various intermodal supply chains.
The Transport Department aims to increase annual passenger rail journeys to 600 million by 2030 through network improvements. Creecy plans to launch a separate request for private sector involvement in passenger services alongside the freight results.
Officials will outline steps toward formal proposal requests that establish parameters for private operator participation in infrastructure development. The response volume indicates growing business confidence in government efforts to rehabilitate rail systems.
