AI images spark backlash in horror films in 2024
Horror filmmakers faced criticism in 2024 after audiences discovered that artificial intelligence had been used to generate images in their productions. The independent film Late Night with the Devil sparked controversy when viewers identified three AI-created interstitial images, prompting directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes to acknowledge their use of the technology for brief still shots.
The backlash prompted A24’s Heretic to add an end-credits disclaimer confirming that no generative AI was used in production. Directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods told Variety they wanted to establish clear boundaries despite their film containing minimal visual effects.
Filmmakers can access free stock photography from sites like Unsplash and Pixabay or purchase vintage materials from antique stores for period-appropriate imagery. Professional designers and photographers remain available through freelance platforms at various price points for custom work.
Visual artist Karla Ortiz urged filmmakers to commission human artists rather than use AI tools. Woods described generative AI as an algorithm that combines existing content without creating genuine art, warning that such shortcuts risk overshadowing creative achievements with public relations problems.
