Aijukwe drives digital shift for inclusive banking in Uganda
Giles Aijukwe, CEO of Letshego Uganda, is steering the firm toward wider banking access for millions who have long lacked services. He frames inclusive finance as a path to opportunity that affirms individual dignity rather than charity. Under his leadership, the lender has embraced digitization, community partnerships and financial education to reach market vendors, motorcycle riders and smallholders across the country. The strategy rejects the idea that low-income customers are high risk and treats loans and savings as viable tools that can lift households while sustaining the lender.
Aijukwe says internal culture shifted from transactional metrics toward a transformational mission, with staff encouraged to see customers as partners rather than statistics. He credits listening to colleagues and clients for maturing his leadership and recalls early resistance to digitization, which proved decisive in lowering costs and improving speed and transparency. The CEO notes the weight of decisions affecting livelihoods and draws hope from resilient clients and younger staff who press for technology and relevance. He keeps a morning routine of quiet reflection and family time to stay grounded.
