Airtel Malawi meets Minister Shadric Namalomba on ICT
Airtel Malawi executives met with Information and Communication Technology Minister Shadric Namalomba to discuss infrastructure development and operational challenges facing the telecommunications sector. The delegation, including Interim Board Chairperson Kaisi Sadala and Managing Director Aashish Dutt, outlined annual investments of approximately K19 billion in network expansion and K200 billion in tax contributions for 2025.
Company representatives highlighted foreign exchange shortages that complicate equipment purchases and maintenance activities. Namalomba indicated his ministry would coordinate with finance officials to prioritize vendor payments and encouraged domestic smartphone assembly to increase device accessibility. He proposed shifting taxation from handsets to services and establishing quarterly consultations between government and industry representatives.
Airtel operates across all network generations and maintains connectivity through multiple international routes via neighboring countries. The company partners with ESCOM and Starlink Lilongwe Ltd to extend coverage into remote regions throughout Malawi.
