AMD backtracks, promises support for RX 5000, 6000
AMD has reversed course on its recent announcement that it would end new feature and game optimization support for its RX 5000 and RX 6000 series graphics cards. Following swift backlash from users—many of whom purchased RDNA 2 GPUs as recently as 2023—the company clarified to Tom’s Hardware that these products will continue receiving updates as needed.
“New features, bug fixes, and game optimizations will continue to be delivered as required by market needs in the maintenance mode branch,” AMD stated, contradicting earlier Adrenalin Driver 25.10.2 release notes that had limited support to only critical security patches and bug fixes for RDNA 1 and RDNA 2 hardware.
The reversal came within a day of the original announcement, suggesting the company responded directly to community concerns. AMD also addressed a separate error in the same driver notes concerning the RX 7900 XTX, confirming that its USB Type-C port will not lose Power Delivery functionality. The company told TechPowerUp the claim was due to “misinformation” in the initial release notes, which has since been corrected.
While the quick corrections are welcome, the incidents raise questions about AMD’s internal review process for public communications. For now, owners of RX 5000 and RX 6000 GPUs can expect continued support beyond basic maintenance.
