AMD partners with U.S. DoE on two supercomputers
The U.S. Department of Energy has partnered with AMD to construct two supercomputers using the company’s artificial intelligence processors for scientific research. The first system, named Lux, will be deployed within six months and feature AMD’s Instinct MI355X chips, in collaboration with HP, Oracle, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The second machine, Discovery, will arrive by 2028 and use a specialized MI430 processor variant designed for high-performance computing tasks.
The department will invest nearly $1 billion in both projects and seeks additional private partnerships to expand its computational infrastructure. AMD secured the contracts over competitors, likely because the agency has extensive experience with the chipmaker’s technology through existing supercomputers such as Frontier. The department may incorporate other hardware vendors as it broadens cooperation with private industry partners.
