Autumn Durald Arkapaw reveals Sinners’ unforgettable villain entrance
Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw discussed her work on Sinners with Variety, highlighting a pivotal sequence in which Jack O’Connell’s vampire character arrives at a farmhouse. Director Ryan Coogler originally opened his screenplay with the scene, then moved it to the film’s midpoint after consulting editor Michael Shawver.
Arkapaw shot the sequence using 35mm and IMAX cameras over two production days at magic hour. The crew faced technical difficulties when the IMAX camera jammed before capturing O’Connell on horseback against the setting sun. Technicians resolved the malfunction moments before losing daylight.
The cinematographer said Coogler designed the entrance to suggest supernatural abilities through subtle visual hints. O’Connell jumped from an elevated platform multiple times until the team achieved the desired effect, suggesting flight capability. The farmhouse sequence establishes the antagonist before his later confrontation with the protagonists.
