Bagudu seeks UN aid for $10b IDP funding
Nigeria has asked the United Nations to help secure affordable financing to address humanitarian crises affecting millions of displaced citizens. Budget Minister Abubakar Bagudu told officials on Wednesday that 10 billion dollars borrowed at 4 percent interest could fund relief programs while creating economic opportunities for people forced from their homes. He said Nigeria must reduce its dependence on declining donor grants by raising capital through market instruments to support sustainable interventions.
The government launched ward-level development programs to map resources across 8,809 administrative zones nationwide. President Bola Tinubu approved initiatives targeting displaced populations and vulnerable communities through increased state allocations and strategic planning. UN representative Mohammed Fall praised federal efforts in northeastern states, where conflict continues, displacing families. Officials from refugee agencies and peace institutes attended the Abuja meeting to coordinate long-term solutions for internally displaced persons.
