MTN Ghana CEO warns AI is making cyberattacks smarter
MTN Ghana chief executive Stephen Blewett warned that cybercriminals are increasingly using artificial intelligence to mount more sophisticated and convincing attacks, making it harder to tell legitimate messages from malicious ones. Speaking at an MTN cybersecurity event held yesterday, he said AI-driven social engineering can persuade victims to reveal private data or take harmful actions, and urged individuals and organizations to update their knowledge of current threats and adopt security tools that use artificial intelligence to detect and respond to incidents. He cautioned against delaying training and preparation because attackers will exploit complacency.
Gerald Awadzie, senior manager at the Cybersecurity Authority, called for greater collaboration across industry, government and civil society to build national capacity and a resilient cyber posture. He said the authority is focused on awareness campaigns, skills development and bringing stakeholders together to improve compliance with basic security practices. Both speakers stressed that widespread action, from individual users to institutions, is needed to reduce exposure to evolving cyber risks.
